Dissociative Disorders Treatment

Picture
One of my favorite populations to work with is individuals who have dissociative disorders because of their tenacity and amazing ability to heal. Dissociation is our brain’s most effective and last survival defense when all other means of escape fail. The more wounding experiences a person has gone through in their life, the more likely they are to have a dissociative disorder.  Many people who I have helped through the years did not know they had a dissociative disorder. These individuals started to experience relief and progress once we were able to identify their issue as a dissociative disorder and then apply the right treatment interventions.

Some signs of a dissociative disorder are: lots of “chatter/voices” in your head, feelings/thoughts/impulses that come out of nowhere and do not feel like they belong to you, feeling adult and competent at times and childlike and incompetent at other times, treatment/medication resistant mental health issues.  If these symptoms describe you then don’t be discouraged, dissociation was your brain’s natural way of protecting you and can easily be managed, treated and healed with the right therapeutic interventions.  Some of the therapeutic interventions I use to help people with dissociation include:

  1. Education and Understanding of Dissociation and Dissociative Parts
  2. Creation of Internal Resources and Internal Residence
  3. Increasing Communication and Collaboration Between Parts
  4. Present Time Orientation to Help Stabilize Parts Stuck in Wounding Experiences
  5. EMDR and Hypnotic Techniques to Help Parts Start Processing the Wounds that Keep Them Separate

Using the above techniques I have experienced great success helping people with dissociation heal and learn to gain compassion for all parts of themselves.
