People may experience many wounding experiences over the course of their lifetime. Often when these experiences happen a part of our brain not only gets stuck reliving the details of the trauma it also gets left with unmet needs and negative messages related to the trauma. Often when this part of the brain is activated it can almost feel the age of the person when the trauma occurred and can feel like a part of self separate from a person’s most adult self. Ego state therapy is a way to engage these parts of self to help them express their viewpoint and needs. The primary focus of Ego State therapy is on validate and meeting the needs that were not met at the time of the wounding event. As a result of this focus, these parts of self become triggered less often and intense emotional reactions/behaviors decrease. In addition to these results, negative messages attached to the wounding experience seem to subside and leave room for positive and more realistic messages.
